New Ghostbusters video game coming from IllFonic?

Ghostbusters Video Game from IllFonic

Update (March 23, 2022): It’s been announced, and the title is Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed!

Thanks to several people sharing on Twitter, all coming from the same source, it seems that IllFonic is working on a Ghostbusters video game. There’s no word on what kind of game it will be, nor what console(s) it will be released on, nor any release window. All we know at this point is that it is happening, and that’s it. We’re considering it a rumor, but a strong one.

How did we learn about the new Ghostbusters video game?

There was an interview with Raphael Saadiq on the Questlove Supreme podcast. During the interview, he mentioned that IllFonic was “currently working on Ghostbusters.” It seems that Raphael Saadiq of Tony! Toni! Toné! fame is a co-founder of IllFonic.

What platform(s) will the new IllFonic Ghostbusters video game be on?

IllFonic has developed games for all Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PS5, and Microsoft Windows. Friday the 13th: The Game (2017) was released for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4, and Microsoft Windows. Predator: Hunting Grounds (2020) was released for PS4 and Microsoft Windows and was published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Their latest release is Arcadegeddon (2021) which was given an early release on PS5 and Microsoft Windows, but they will be exploring release on other consoles in 2022 after the official launch.

However, Ghostbusters is a big enough franchise that they tend to go multiplatform with the games. Ghostbusters: The Video Game has been released across practically everything, including Wii, Switch, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, and PC. It also had a very different version released for Nintendo DS. That said, Sony has kept Spider-Man all to itself, since the 2018 release of Spider-Man on the PS4.

Since Ghostbusters is a Sony property, will they keep it tied up to the PS5? I don’t know. On the one hand, it’s their property, and they could. It’s the one thing that would get me to buy a PS5, which would be the first Sony console I would own. However, when it comes to the Spider-Man games, those seem to be “system sellers.” If it’s the only place you can play the game, then they’re going to see people like me buying the system, just for the one game. But is Ghostbusters something that could do that? If it were an open-world game of ghostbusting, with ongoing missions throughout the city, including popular ghosts from the movies and the cartoons, then absolutely. Plus, if it had awesome online multiplayer action, then count me in.

On the other hand, IllFonic tends to develop its games for both Windows and consoles. So even if the game is a PS5 exclusive as far as consoles go, it will likely see release on PC as well.

Thanks to Ghostbusters News for sharing the news earlier. We’ll be keeping an eye on this for sure.
