The Real Ghostbusters was my introduction to the world of Ghostbusters. I was far too young for the movie, and remember being confused why Egon and Ray didn’t have the same hair color as their animated counterparts when I eventually saw the movie.
I’m also a huge fan of raising money for charities that help children. This event combines both of those. And it’s also available as a livestream if you can’t be in L.A. for it.
Saturday Morning Cartoons United has announced Giving Back with The Real Ghostbusters: A 40th Anniversary Celebration, a charity event coming to Dynasty Typewriter in Los Angeles on Saturday, October 3.
The afternoon is built around a live script reading with members of the original cast and a few notable guests. The announced lineup includes Maurice LaMarche, Laura Summer, Phil LaMarr, and Laraine Newman, with Patrick Cotnoir producing and casting the reading. Maurice LaMarche played Dr. Egon Spengler and Laura Summer played Janine Melnitz on The Real Ghostbusters. You might recognize Phil LaMarr from MADtv or Futurama, and Laraine Newman from Saturday Night Live. Producer Patrick Cotnoir is also producer of The George Lucas Talk Show podcast, among others.
The event will also include a live performance by The Flux Capacitors Band, including The Real Ghostbusters theme song, along with a screening of The Real Ghostbusters and the independent animated short McBusters from Myke Chillian.
Best of all, a portion of the proceeds will benefit Starlight Children’s Foundation, helping support programs for seriously ill kids and their families, including the group’s Ghostbusters-themed hospital gowns.
The event is being presented by Saturday Morning Cartoons United in collaboration with Sony Pictures, Ghost Corps, and Ghostbusters Give Back. Doors open at 1:00 p.m., The Flux Capacitors perform from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., and the main program runs from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
