Ghostbusters 4 is coming! Working Title: Firehouse

FIREHOUSE (Ghostbusters 4)

Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan are currently writing the sequel to their 2021 smash hit, Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Currently code-named FIREHOUSE, we don’t really know too much about this movie, except for this:

Winston Zeddemore will be part of it, as will most (if not all) of the new cast members from Ghostbusters: Afterlife. And New York City might feature pretty prominently. I also believe we’ll see more of Summerville in the film, but that’s just my own prediction.

They can honestly go anywhere with it from where Ghostbusters: Afterlife ended, and I’m really excited for the release.

Ghostbusters 4 is scheduled for release on December 20, 2023.

I was supposed to attend (virtually) a live commentary with Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan last week, but they canceled it at the last minute (it will be rescheduled), because they were writing and were on a roll. Yes, they were writing FIREHOUSE. They didn’t want to stop the creative flow they had going. As someone who enjoys creative writing, when you hit those moments of creative clarity, you write. And, frankly, if a commentary on Ghostbusters: Afterlife has to be delayed for anything, it might as well be because they are writing the sequel to that film, and want to stay focused.

Apparently, they had the story idea for FIREHOUSE while they were filming Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

We don’t know yet if Jason Reitman will direct it, or if they’ll hire someone else to direct it. Gil Kenan, the co-writer of Ghostbusters: Afterlife and FIREHOUSE has also directed in the past. Monster House is probably what he’s most well-known for, but I really enjoyed City of Ember, in which he directed actor Bill Murray in a small but important role. I knew the president of Walden Media at the time, and if only I knew then what I know now, I would have tried to get an interview set up with Gil Kenan through my contacts at Walden Media. What a fun conversation that would have been! That said, could Gil Kenan take the director’s chair this time around? Or will Jason Reitman return to that seat for another film? Time will tell. My money is on Jason Reitman directing at least one more, if not two more, before passing the torch to another director for the live-action universe.
