When Quarter Arcades announced plans to recreate The Real Ghostbusters arcade game in its signature quarter-scale format, I was very excited. This was one of the first arcade games I ever played. Quarter Arcades has already proven it can navigate complex licensing with other releases, including cabinets tied to major legacy franchises. In this case, the hurdle is uniquely Ghostbusters-shaped — a franchise with:

- multiple eras of media
- and music that was never designed to be relicensed in 2026 hardware form
Why This Cabinet Still Matters
Even in limbo, the project matters — and not just as a collectible.
The original Real Ghostbusters arcade game represents a specific era of licensed games where:
- animation-style artwork was pushed hard in arcades
- co-op gameplay was king
- and licensed properties weren’t afraid to get weird
A faithful quarter-scale cabinet would be more than nostalgia. It would be preservation — a physical, playable reminder of a Ghostbusters era that rarely gets modern attention.
So… Is It Dead?
No — but it’s also not close.
Based on what’s been shared, the cabinet appears to be on hold indefinitely, pending a breakthrough in music licensing. That could happen tomorrow… or never. These kinds of negotiations don’t move on fan enthusiasm alone.
For now, the project exists in the same strange space as many Ghostbusters ventures:
Not canceled. Not coming soon. Just… waiting.
